ICYMI: Two kinds of Ukraine war refugees flood Poland, some are not as welcome
This is the scene at Ukraine’s border with Poland, where the largest refugee crisis in Europe since the Yugoslav wars is unfolding.have now fled the country amid Russia’s invasion, begun just over a week ago. With cities like the capital Kyiv and Kharkiv in the northeast under siege, that number is only set to rise. Experts say it could reach 1.5 million by the end of the weekend.
At one petrol station five kilometres from the border, the aid organization Caritas distributes supplies to those making the journey: food, water and blankets. The images of Russian atrocities, including the indiscriminate artillery attacks on Kharkiv and other cities, are fuelling Ukrainian resolve. The same cannot be said for the many other civilians fleeing: migrants from Africa, India and the Middle East, working or studying in Ukraine.
To make that journey, however, much worse lies ahead: the migrant holding area at the Ukrainian border post, where hundreds wait for days for some sign they will be allowed to cross.“We stayed for two or three days, but the bombings were just too much,” he says. “We arrived here three days ago, but we can’t cross.”
