, which follows a group of top-ranked competitive cheerleaders at Navarro College in Texas, is an engaging binge watch for a variety of reasons.fans will appreciate the rampant interpersonal cheer drama. Many of us in the “mommy issues” community, though, have found ourselves magnetically drawn to Navarro’s coach, Monica Aldama, who rules her squad with an iron fist and dedicated, quasi-maternal attention.
Aldama has led her squad to 14 National Cheer Association championships in the junior college division and five grand national titles, which pretty much makes her the Bill Belichick of college cheerleading. More entrancing than the physical stunts she choreographs, though, is her team’s level of devotion to her.
It’s difficult, at times, to watch Aldama discipline her team; at one point, she watches stone-faced as cheerleader T.T., injured in a non-team-related setting, struggles through a practice and ultimately collapses in pain. Another cheerleader, Morgan—who, like several others on the team, comes from difficult family circumstances—is filmed saying she would “take a bullet” for Aldama, and watching the cheerleader try to compete through a severe rib injury to please Aldama is heartbreaking.
