The fourth round US Open clash was all set up to be Alex de Minaur’s finest hour when he took the first set over Daniil Medvedev, only for the Russian to finally spring to life with a “tweener” even Nick Kyrgios would have been proud of.

Daniil Medvedev must have wondered, even briefly, in New York on Tuesday whether Alex de Minaur had become his tennis kryptonite.

Barely two hours later, Medvedev marched into the last eight for the fourth time in five years, booking another showdown with childhood friend Andrey Rublev, thanks to a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 triumph that belied his lethargic start. De Minaur will also be disappointed at how little resistance he offered once Medvedev broke him for the first time to clinch the second set and change the course of the match.

The 2021 champion actually had more difficulty holding serve in the ensuing games, at least until a de Minaur double fault sunk him in an 0-30 hole at 4-5 that he could not dig himself out of.
