Turkey celebrates the 100th anniversary of the independence war that laid the foundation of the country under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

Turkey on Sunday marks the centenary of Independence Day with the country's youth organising events to celebrate actions of the founding leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. On May 19, 1919, Ataturk, or 'father of the Turks', embarked on a mission to convince others to put aside past differences, for the fight of their lives.

Ataturk's actions gave his people the courage to stand up and fight. A lesson that the Turkish people say they will never forget. "The Ottoman empire collapsed, they lost control. And then Turks were left with no hope. In a couple of months, he was able to convince people and lift their morale, that 'we do not have to surrender'," says historian Vehbi Baysan.
