KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Tun Dr Ismail’s decision to return to politics and be in the government after retiring for almost two years to spend time with his family reflected the type of person he was, a man who always placed the interests of the country above all else.
Tawfik said his mother was against Dr Ismail returning to work initially as she was worried about his health as he had yet to fully recover from a heart attack then. “My mother understood him , that his duty to the country is greater than his personal interests and also knew the sacrifices he had to make,” he added.
However, his father’s plan of retirement did not last because, in 1969, Dr Ismail came out of retirement and returned to become Foreign Minister and Deputy Chairman of the National Operations Council . The programme, to be held at Dataran Merdeka here on Aug 2, aims to educate the young generation about the statesman’s contribution to developing the country.
