Young Aussies are being reeled into placing their first bet through prolific and powerful advertising by the multi-billion-dollar gambling industry, a government study with startling findings has warned.

Among individuals at risk of gambling harm, 41 per cent reported trying a new form of betting, and 40 per cent bet on impulse, as a result of seeing or hearing betting ads. There is a strong link between exposure to betting advertising and riskier gambling behaviour, the AGRC study warned. The social costs of gambling – including financial devastation and serious relationship damage across families - is well documented.
