Two days after the first Republican primary debate of the 2024 election cycle, it's clear that former President Donald Trump was right to skip out on the proceedings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to his supporters and a number of critics.

Some candidates, such as former Vice President Mike Pence, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, put up positive debate performances. However, no one, including Gov. Ron DeSantis , fully separated themselves from the pack or made a serious case to the Trump faithful to ditch the former president in light of his legal troubles, and even a day after being arrested and booked in Fulton County, Georgia, Trump remains the GOP's presumptive front-runner.

And those who didn't, such as former Govs. Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson, hold no serious hopes of winning the nomination this cycle, those operatives say. Trump clearly noticed the moment, as he would later go on to declare Ramaswamy, who some Trump allies have floated as a potential vice presidential pick, the winner of the debate.

Instead of debating, Trump opted to appear before voters in a different format Wednesday evening: A taped-to-live interview with former Fox host Tucker Carlson that was published on X, formerly known as Twitter. Democratic officials have suggested to the Washington Examiner in the past that the president wants to run against Trump again. His campaign and the party believe that, coupled with a handful of positive economic indicators, Trump's legal problems will slowly pull votes away from him in the general election, even if they help him during the primary.
