Former President Donald Trump used the news of Rupert Murdoch's decision to step down from the head of his Fox media empire to bash Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Rupert Murdoch announced on Thursday he would step down as the chairman of Fox Corporation and the executive chairman of News Corp., with his son Lachlan Murdoch set to take his place in mid-November. In a Friday post on Truth Social, Trump said he does not believe he is responsible for Rupert Murdoch's decision to step down, but he also said that"while we’re at it," McConnell, whom he labeled as a"Democrat," should be gotten rid of.
Trump has constantly targeted McConnell, 81, since the former president left office in 2021. Last month, Trump called for McConnell to retire, and in 2022, he said the Kentucky Republican had a"death wish" for voting in favor of legislation introduced by Democrats. The latest attack again goes after McConnell's voting record and comes as Congress seeks to avoid a government shutdown. While much of the focus has been on turmoil in the House of Representatives, the Senate must also work with the lower chamber to get appropriations passed before the end of the month to avert a shutdown.
McConnell received the first challenge to his position as Senate GOP leader last year after Republicans failed to regain control of the chamber in the 2022 elections.
