The former president called in to a Philadelphia conservative talk show on Tuesday and offered his reasoning behind not endorsing Trump loyalist and GOP gubernatorial candidate Lou Barletta.
Former President Donald Trump phoned in to a Philadelphia conservative talk show on Tuesday to explain his endorsement decision in Pennsylvania's governor's race. Former President Donald Trump threw his endorsement behind far-right Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano because he has been “very loyal on election integrity.”, Trump explained what drove him to back Mastriano in the now seven-person field of candidates still vying for the GOP nomination in the primary.
Along with ripping Pennsylvania’s election system with no evidence as “very corrupt,” Trump also criticized presumptive Democratic nominee Josh Shapiro’s campaign ad that highlights Mastriano’s stance as an abortion opponent, efforts to audit the 2020 election, his support for Trump, and desire to end mail-in voting before closing with: “Is that what we want in Pennsylvania?”
However, Republican party insiders are worried that a conservative firebrand like Mastriano will cost them the governor’s office that has been in Democratic hands for the past eight years. They were so concerned that at the last minute they began encouraging the rest of the Republican field to coalesce around a Mastriano alternative. That effort succeeded in getting Jake Corman and Melissa Hart to drop out of the race and endorse Barletta.
