After moving the Republican National Convention from Charlotte, N.C. to Jacksonville, Fla., because he wanted to give an in-person acceptance speech, President Donald Trump announced that he had told organizers to cancel the Florida event.
when the decision to move from Charlotte to Jacksonville was confirmed. “We are thrilled to celebrate this momentous occasion in the great city of Jacksonville,” Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement. “Not only does Florida hold a special place in President Trump’s heart as his home state, but it is crucial in the path for victory in 2020. We look forward to bringing this great celebration and economic boon to the Sunshine State in just a few short months.
The president cited his duty to “to protect the American people” from COVID-19, for which he once again used the racist epithet “China virus,” as why he had decided to cancel a “top of the line” event with “the pageantry, the signs, the excitement.” Trump said that some preliminary events, including his official re-nomination vote, would go ahead as scheduled in Charlotte, N.C., but that "we won't do a big crowded convention."
When asked by reporters at Thursday's briefing what his plans were now for his acceptance speech, Trump said that it would likely be online, but that no details had yet been worked out. "We'll have a very nice something," he said.Sign Up Now The latest fashion news, beauty coverage, celebrity style, fashion week updates, culture reviews, and videos on Vogue.com.
