Former President Donald Trump echoed fraudulent claims after he and 18 others were indicted by an Atlanta grand jury this month over alleged efforts to overturn Georgia's election results in 2020. His comments came while praising recent favorable poll numbers in the state.

Trump said in a video posted Wednesday on his social media platform Truth Social that he “easily won the great state of Georgia in 2016” and received “by far the most votes in history for a sitting president.”“But shockingly lost Georgia,” Trump continued. “All this despite winning nearby Alabama and South Carolina in record-setting landslides.”

Trump continued to claim he won Georgia in the 2020 election over the declared victor, President Joe Biden, despite facing charges in Fulton County for trying to subvert election results. Trump requested a recount of votes in Georgia, with top elections officials complying and confirming Biden won by a margin of 11,779 votes, slightly down from statewide numbers that initially showed Biden won by 12,284 votes.

The former president cited a new poll from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which showed him in a 42-point lead against his main GOP challenger, Gov. Ron DeSantis . DeSantis gathered 15% of the vote, and all other presidential contenders polled in single digits. “Wow. A big win in Georgia for President Trump,” he said on Truth Social. “Georgia, which is absolutely a Republican state. I have no doubt about it.”Trump has criticized Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and the city of Atlanta following her indictment of him after a two-year investigation into his efforts. On Tuesday, Willis filed a motion to expedite Trump and 18 co-defendants’ cases, aiming for a trial date of Oct. 26.

“So sad what has happened to one of the greatest places on Earth, but we will win in 2024,” Trump said. “Georgia will lead the way. I believe Georgia is going to lead the way, and we will make America great again.”
