Trump administration action on national security risks posed by social media applications including TikTok and WeChat likely 'in weeks': official

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE - President Donald Trump’s administration is studying the national security risks of social media applications including TikTok and WeChat, with action to address the issue expected in the coming weeks, a White House official said on Wednesday.

“I don’t know that there’s any self-imposed deadline in terms of action, but I would say that we’re looking at weeks, not months,” he added. Earlier this month, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States was “certainly looking at” banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok, but offered no further details.

Reuters reported last November that a powerful U.S. government committee known as CFIUS had launched a national security review of Bytedance’s $1 billion acquisition of U.S. social media app Musical.ly.
