Warren Acott, 66, was diagnosed with the condition seven months ago. From a pub in Victoria, he is taking a petition to Canberra in the hope of improving knowledge about the disease.

Warren Acott is riding a lawnmower to Canberra to raise awareness about motor neurone disease.Warren Acott has been on the move all his working life, but today the 66-year-old truck driver set off on a journey of a different kind.

Mr Acott chose to do the 12-day journey to the nation's capital on a lawnmower because it was the only way he could get around at home. Those who care about him most say Mr Acott is determined to ride his mower to Canberra to "give the pollies a little shake-up". MND killed one in 500 Australians annually back when expert and professor of neurology at Macquarie University, Dominic Rowe, started working as a junior doctor 30 years ago."In 2022, 803 Australians died from MND."There is a voluntary registry, but Professor Rowe says it has only recorded a fraction of the estimated 2,500 people with the condition in Australia at any one time.

A Department of Health and Aged Care spokesperson said no state or territory had made MND notifiable and no approach had been made to the Department of Health and Aged Care regarding listing.
