Triston McKenzie's first start in 89 games was a success from a health standpoint, but a disaster on the scoreboard.
McKenzie threw 42 fastballs, eight curveballs and two sliders. His fastball topped out at 94 mph and averaged a little over 91 mph. Spin rates on all three pitches were down from his previous two starts this season, according to StatCast. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Baltimore’s lineup executed a patient approach against McKenzie, knowing he was probably going to be limited in his first outing after three months away from the big leagues.
It was a far cry from McKenzie’s first start of the season on June 4 in Minnesota when he walked just one and allowed one hit in five shutout innings against the Twins at Target Field. Francona said it is impossible to know what a player is capable of after spending that much time on the sidelines. McKenzie said he felt good from a health standpoint following the game, but that did not make the outing any easier to swallow.
