The tensions stem from a November incident where a mob attacked seven tribal Christians during a funeral, demanding they abandon Christianity and return to Hinduism or their indigenous faith. Activists and Christians report a pattern of persecution over the past five years, with authorities allegedly siding with the aggressors.

Beeruram Baghel, the village council head, denied the land dispute and said villagers want the Christian families to return to the Hindu religion.
