‘Wow I learned something new today.’
Travellers are only just discovering oxygen masks on planes are not connected to an air tank.
Explaining the science behind the masks, Joe said the candle releases oxygen as a gas when it was burning.Joe Horneman revealed how oxygen masks on planes are not connected to any air tanks. Planes use ‘oxygen candles’.“The device is called an oxygen generator and it’s able to pack a lot of oxygen in a tiny space because the oxygen is stored as a solid in the form of sodium chlorate,” he said.
“The device is sometimes called an oxygen candle because it slowly burns up and eventually runs out of oxygen.” While one added: “Wow! This is something I never knew and I didn’t know I needed to know! But now that I know, I feel much better about them.” Another explained: “As a flight attendant, we are taught it is really important to let passengers know that they need to pull down on the mask to start the flow of oxygen.”
