Travellers from New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States made up the majority of the more than 412,000 overseas visitors this holiday season.
According to new data from the ABS, Australia saw total arrivals increase to 1.6 million continuing an upward trend which began in October 2021 as pent up demand proved stronger than headwinds created by inflationary pressure on fuel costs for airlines.
The massive gap has yet to close with post-pandemic recovery stymied by Russia's invasion of Ukraine sending fuel costs rocketing. Demand for international travel exploded throughout 2022 as lockdowns and border restrictions were lifted, but that momentum has not been enough to drive numbers back to pre-COVID levels and is now at risk of stalling as interest rate hikes here and overseas lead consumers to tighten their belts.
"We and our colleagues in the Australian tourism industry miss our Chinese friends very much," she told Chinese media. Brutal lockdowns and the complete closure of the Chinese border played a significant role, as did the requirement by Australia for Chinese travellers to return a negative COVID-19 test before arrival.
