Mexican drama 'Emilia Perez' breaks record with 13 Oscar nods. Film features first openly transgender acting nominee.
Jacques Audiard’s Mexican drama, “Emilia Perez,” led the 2024 Oscar nominations with a record-breaking 13 nods, according to an announcement delayed by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The Netflix-released film, about a narco boss transitioning to life as a woman and turning her back on crime, secured nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best International Film.
It also garnered multiple mentions in categories such as Best Song, Best Score and Best Sound. The film’s star Karla Sofia Gascon became the first openly transgender acting nominee in the Best Actress category, while Zoe Saldana received a nod for Best Supporting Actress. Selena Gomez, another co-star, was notably absent from the nominations despite facing criticism for her Spanish-language dialogue. “Emilia Perez” shattered the previous record for most nominations for a non-English-language film, previously held by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Roma” with 10 nominations each. “I wonder if it’s becoming a trend—a desire to make films with different linguistic elements, unique actors, and distinctive themes,” said Audiard.Other notable nominations included Adrien Brody for Best Actor in “The Brutalist,” and Sebastian Stan for his unsettling portrayal of a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice.” The film has attracted legal threats from Trump’s legal team, particularly for a scene depicting a young Trump raping his first wife, Ivana. In a separate category, Jeremy Strong earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the youthful Trump’s mentor, Roy Cohn, in “The Apprentice.”Meanwhile, in a highly competitive Best Actress race, A-list actresses Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman failed to secure nominations. Instead, Demi Moore, known for her comeback performance in “The Substance” earned a nomination and is considered a favorite. Her competition includes Gascon, “Anora” star Mikey Madison, and Fernanda Torres from Brazil for “I’m Still Here.” Cynthia Erivo, leading lady of “Wicked,” and her co-star and pop music sensation Ariana Grande were both nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.The announcement came amidst a somber atmosphere as Los Angeles grappled with the devastating wildfires that claimed over two dozen lives and displaced tens of thousands.
