Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has opened with the highest Rotten Tomatoes audience score of any live-action Transformers film, despite having a rotten score from critics. The latest installment in the Transformers film series is set in the '90s and sees the Maximals and Terrorcons depicted in live-action form for the first time. The film sits at a 54% critics score at the time of writing, a far cry from its critically-acclaimed predecessor, Bumblebee.

While critic and audience ratings for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts reflect the first Transformers film, the newest installment seeks to redefine the franchise. The film is set in the '90s and follows the same canon as Bumblebee, which contradicts the original five films directed by Michael Bay. The villain Unicron is another key difference, as Transformers: The Last Knight established the planet-sized Transformer is Earth itself, which isn't the case in the latest installment.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also introduces the Maximals led by Optimus Primal and the Terrorcons led by Scourge, who will act as new allies and dangers in the film. Since neither group of Transformers has been adapted to live-action before, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is promising a very different feel compared to previous Transformers movies.
