The Atlanta Hawks aren’t trading Trae Young. All you needed to do was watch Game 5 against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday to figure out why.
The narrative that has been simmering for months in some corners of the NBA media — that Atlanta might look to move on from Young if this season ended badly — got so that management felt compelled to get on the phone with Young the day of the Hawks’ play-in game at Miami and assure him it wasn’t true.
► And in the last three games of this series against Boston, Young has averaged 35 points while shooting 45.7% from the field. He was particularly clutch at the end of Game 3 and in the fourth quarter of Game 5 with 16 points. Right now, it should mean the end of the ridiculous idea that the Hawks would be better off trading him. This has been an undeniably disappointing year in Atlanta. The Hawks unloaded some draft picks to get Dejounte Murray, a backcourt pairing that has shown potential but has been frustrating at times. Young had a poor shooting season, making just 33.
But even down 3-2, the Hawks and Young have shown some good things in this series. Since getting blown out in Games 1 and 2 in Boston, this has been a pretty competitive matchup with Young leading the way and getting good support from Hunter in Game 3, Murray in Game 4 and John Collins in Game 5. There are going to certainly be some changes in Atlanta, regardless of how this season ends. De’Andre Hunter, Collins and Clint Capela is a talented trio at the 3-4-5, but starting two frontcourt players who don’t make 3-pointers at a high rate and a small forward who isn’t a shot creator or passer provides a problematic fit given the large contracts all three of them will carry into next season.
