Dako Morfey wishes the tradition of night watchmen hadn’t disappeared with the passage of time.
Morfey, of Michigan City, is an insurance adjuster now but formerly was a police officer. He and other actors on the Porter County Courthouse’s south lawn in downtown Valparaiso offered a glimpse into life in a bygone era.
“I’m the night watchman,” Morfey said. “My job is very simple. It’s to maintain order and protect the town.” Night watchmen checked locks, addressed loud noises and alerted people to fires with a handheld noisemaker — an early version of a fire alarm.
