Toyota is set to be the next new entry into Australian touring car racing series, the Repco Supercars Championship from 2026.
The Japanese brand will enter the series in 2026 with the GR Supra that will be designed and developed to the Gen 3 ruleset by Toyota Australia, and the race car will be powered by a V8 engine. This will be a production-derived 2UR-GSE quad-cam 5.0 litre naturally aspirated V8 unit, as found in models like the, with the concept’s more pronounced ‘beak’ and centre section of the front fascia. Viewed in profile, its proportions differ slightly from those of the road car and GT4 car, too.
From 2026, Toyota will field a minimum of four GR Supra race cars in the series, with two of the cars to be run by Toyota homologation partner Walkinshaw Andretti United with drivers Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood. To date, WAU has recorded 191 race wins, six driver’s championships and seven Bathurst 1000 race wins in the series.Toyota has committed to the series for a minimum of five years, the company said in a statement.
Upon entering the championship, Toyota will be competing against series stalwarts Ford and General Motors – historically Holden, now represented by Chevrolet – who currently field the Mustang and Camaro in the series, respectively. The Australian V8 Supercars championship returned to being a two-brand series after Kelly Racing ended its campaign of the Nissan Altima in the series in 2019, having started with the model in 2013, while Erebus Motorsport ran the Mercedes-AMG E63 from 2013 to 2015. Volvo, too had its presence in the series, via Garry Rogers Motorsport with the V60 Polestar from 2014 to 2016, according toOpen roads and closed circuits hold great allure for Mick Chan.
