In 2021, McSweyn became an Olympic 1500-metre finalist, bagged two Diamond League victories and, in the space of nine days, broke the Australian mile and 1500-metre records.Track & Field News

In March, he bombed out of a 5000-metre race in Melbourne and, a day later, long COVID was cited as he withdrew from the world indoor championships.Although a front-running beast and gutsy final-lap contender at his best, he laboured home at the back of the field, or close to, in a couple of Diamond League races in May, long COVID lingering.

"I'm hoping to put together a decent result in Doha and drive from there throughout the rest of the season," McSweyn said. "I think I was able to push through and be pretty resilient ... I got back for the world champs last year. Halfway through the year I thought I would head back to Australia and not even get to a world champs, which was probably the big goal last year."I think in the scheme of things I was able to pull it out of the fire and at least get back for one major championships."Casting his mind back to the races in which he was badly beaten last year, McSweyn admitted they weighed on him.

"Growing up and watching the Diamond League on TV and thinking how incredible this level is ... Then to win a few races that year was pretty cool," said the Melbourne Track Club runner.
