Environment Canada has released a special weather statement for the City of Toronto indicating locally heavy rainfall.
The weather agency has warned against possible hazards, including pools of water on roads and in low-lying areas. The City of Toronto says severe rain Monday has caused a bypass at Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant. This happens during heavy, prolonged rainfall, when “the volume of rainwater and sewage reaching a plant may be more than can be treated and processed in a short period of time.” Some of the wastewater is then diverted to a secondary treatment process called a “bypass” in order to protect the plant. The city says the treated water always meets strict federal and provincial regulations.
