USD to face Portland next after knocking out Pepperdine
March Madness for USD’s men’s basketball team hasn’t been synonymous with cutting down nets and postseason appearances in recent seasons. In seven of the last eight years, the Toreros made a quick exit from the West Coast Conference Tournament, losing their first game.
Two minutes, 25 seconds into the game USD led 10-0. The lead stretched to 11 but by halftime it was down to 36-32.“I’m thinking we’ve got to make three plays,” said head coach Sam Scholl. “We’ve got to score, get a stop, then score.” Calcaterra drilled his first two shots, both 3s, and finished with a game-high 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting, 3 of 4 beyond the 3-point arc.
