USD wins the first set, but Texas takes the final three in an NCAA women's volleyball match in Omaha, Neb.
The University of San Diego volleyball team’s magical run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end at the Final Four on Thursday night in Omaha, Neb., as No. 1-ranked Texas defeated the third-ranked Toreros 3-1 in the semifinals.
The set scores were 26-28, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20. Texas advances to Saturday’s final where the Longhorns will play the winner of the later match between Louisville and Pittsburgh. The tight first set may have surprised the top-seeded Longhorns, but they took the momentum in the second set and never relinquished it.While the Toreros were making their first appearance in the Final Four, Texas was playing on the stage for the 10Since that championship, the Longhorns have lost in the national semifinals twice and the NCAA championship match three times.
Breana Edwards led USD with 14 kills, and Leyla Blackwell, Grace Frohling and Katie Lukes each had nine kills. Texas was led by Madisen Skinner’s 17 kills.While USD has been to the NCAA Tournament 25 of the last 27 seasons, this was by far the Toreros’ deepest run. Previously USD’s best had been four appearances at the Sweet 16.
