Wednesday night and Thursday morning a so-called Blue Supermoon or Super Blue Moon or the far more fun to say scientific term, perigee syzygy, will grace the night sky.
Regardless, a supermoon is likely to be at its most super during the twilight hours when you can gaze upon it with the landscape in your visual frame at the same time. I’ve seen estimates that the low-lying supermoon is up to 40 percent larger-looking. I suppose that means 15 percent is accounted for by the fact that the moon is physically closer to us along its orbital path tonight, and the rest is thanks to the aforementioned mysterious illusion.
As for that fun term, perigee syzygy — perigee is the term for when the moon is closest to earth along its orbit, which is an ellipse rather than a perfect circle. Syzygy is the scientific word for an alignment of three bodies in a straight line, which is what happens with the earth, sun and moon whenever we observe a full moon from Earth.
The concept of a blue moon is really better thought of as an “extra” moon over a certain period of calendar time. Normally we get one full moon per month, three per season and 12 per year. But because there are 12.37 full moons per each year, which consists of 365.24 days, rather than an even 12, we sometimes get 13 moons inside one calendar year.... [+]Traditionally, the phrase blue moon was important in terms of the seasons.
“O churche men are wyly foxes […] Yf they say the mone is blewe / We must beleve that it is true / Admittynge their interpretacion.”tonight’s super blue moon won’t really be blue, either in the literal or the original colloquial sense of the phrase. It could be sorta super though, especially at dusk. To check it out, all you need to do is walk outside and face east, which is certainly super easy.
