The plume generated during the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption in Tonga created the perfect conditions for a 'supercharged' lightning storm.
When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano in Tonga erupted in 2022, it generated the most intense lightning ever recorded, a new study finds.
According to the new study, published Tuesday in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, these conditions produced electrically charged collisions between ash, supercooled water and hailstones in the plume and triggered"a supercharged thunderstorm, the likes of which we've never seen," study lead author Alexa Van Eaton, a volcanologist at the U.S. Geological Survey , said in a statement.
