After verbal altercation with fans at Petco Park, Tommy Pham blasts go-ahead homer in Padres loss to Diamondbacks
At some point, the Petco Park faithful turned on Tommy Pham as he moved on from the Padres after the 2021 season.Pham let his bat do is talking Saturday afternoon. The former Padre got into a verbal altercation with fans in the on-deck circle before his first at-bat and homered in his third, a tiebreaking two-run shot that fueled Arizona’s 6-4 win in the opening game of a crucial doubleheader at Petco Park.
The Padres had answered Arizona’s two-run first off rookie Matt Waldron with home runs from Ha-Seong Kim and Manny Machado. They tied the game again in the fourth inning on Matt Carpenter’s first hit since July 16, a 78 mph ball dumped into right field to score Luis Campusano from second. The fifth-inning fly ball wasn’t hit as hard — 101 mph — but he pulled an 87 mph cutter down the heart of the plate over the wall in left for a 5-3 lead.Tom Cosgrove allowed a run in the sixth, Barlow threw two shutout innings and Steven Wilson stranded two in a scoreless ninth.
Trent Grisham’s tapper to first pushed the runners to second and third, but Kim popped out. After Fernando Tatis Jr. walked to load the bases, Soto flied out to the warning track in left to end the game. Fully facing the seating area while Marte struck out during the argument, Pham went on to say, “It’s always funny, we always got a white man, a white man feel like he can disrespect me.”Pham did not make headlines in his visit to Petco Park earlier this year with the Mets, but he challenged Luke Voit to a fight in April 2022 after the Padres’ former DH collided with Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson on a play at the plate.
