Tomball softball coach Matt Marshall steps away from the program to spend time with his family

Marshall coached Tomball for the last time this past Friday in a District 15-6A finale...

During spring break, Tomball softball coach Matt Marshall found out that his son Kase is going to need another heart surgery.It was right around then that Marshall realized he needed to focus on being a dad.

“It's been really hard because I love this team, but right now I got to focus on Team Marshall, and it's been a very hard decision,” Marshall said. “It’s not one I take lightly because I made a commitment to these girls just like I asked them to do to me.” This was Marshall’s first head coaching gig at the high school level. He got the job in 2019 about two weeks before the season started. A Brazoswood graduate, Marshall played college ball at Wharton County Junior College and transferred to Minot State University in Minot, N.D., before finishing up at the University of Houston.

Matt’s wife, Jean Anne, has joined him the past two instances and plans to do so again for the 26.2-mile marathon next January. Marshall said he used to talk to his team about “being comfortable being uncomfortable” all the time. He said there aren’t many things that are more uncomfortable for him than running, especially long distance.
