Police believe the car thief abandoned the child by the road in Chelsea in Melbourne's south-east before fleeing the area in the stolen car just before 4pm yesterday.

The two-year-old's father had left him asleep in the grey Volkswagen SUV and left the car running while he ran into a grocery store on the Nepean Highway in Chelsea.A man then jumped into the car and drove away in it. The alleged thief then stopped on the nearby Bath Street and left the child by the side of the road.He was unharmed and returned to his father.

Police searched for the stolen car, which was last seen driving erratically south along the Nepean Highway, but were unable to track it down."This situation serves as a timely reminder - never leave young children unattended in a car. A lot can happen in the space of a minute or two," the post reads.

Anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, information or who witnessed the incident is urged to contact police.
