Harris County Precinct 4 intends to invest $2 million toward planting 1,200 trees...
"Trees are very beneficial for the collective mental well-being of any given neighborhood," Ward said.A study by thefound neighborhoods with greater canopy coverage — such as West University Place, which has 38 percent tree shade and an average temperature of 82 degrees — have a lower average temperature than areas with lower tree shade, such as Gulfton, with only 6 percent tree shade and an average temperature of 90 degrees.
in 2021, finding low-income neighborhoods and communities of color have significantly less tree canopy than other neighborhoods. The American Forests analysis determined redlining policies dating back to the 1930s helped lay the groundwork for the inequity, and many cities and counties have been working to correct such policies since.
Ward said many neighborhoods around Houston still need more trees, such as Sunnyside, Third and Fifth Ward, Acres Homes and parts of Southeast Houston.By planting trees in areas on behalf of the people who live there, Ward says contributors are quantifiably and definitively making a small incremental increase in residents' quality of life.
"By doing that, in concert with other improvements, and you do that consistently over time, you make a very important improvement in any given area. And sending the message that they're not forgotten, and they're not less important than somebody who lives in a different zip code," Ward said.
