IPOH: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will meet the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) over the construction of the Nenggiri hydroelectric dam in Gua Musang, Kelantan, says Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
The TNB chairman said on Wednesday its representatives have also met with the Orang Asli Development Department , detailing the number of people and area involved.
“Actually, it has been about eight years since the project was supposed to start, but we got the approval only this year.“However, consultations will be made with Suhakam on the matter, ” he told reporters after TNB’s"Ceria Ke Sekolah" programme at a hotel here. On Monday , the Kelantan Network of Orang Asli Villages had urged the Federal and state governments to call off the construction of the dam.
JKOAK claimed that the construction would submerge around 5,384ha of forest, which is customary land and territory of the orang asli. Its president Mustafa Along said four orang asli settlements – Pos Tohoi, Pos Pulat, Kampung Wias and Kampung Bering – would be submerged and 18 other settlements indirectly affected.
