Per Deadline, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem box office has pulled off a superb feat in its second domestic weekend. It is set to close Sunday with a 3-day gross of $15.7 million, just a 44 percent drop from its opening weekend of $28 million. This is an even better hold than recent popular animated movies Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Encanto .
How Does Mutant Mayhem Compare to the Other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movies? In addition to featuring a strong hold for a modern animated movie, Mutant Mayhem compares well to the week 2 holds of the previous six movies in the franchise. First and foremost, it outdoes the modern entries quite easily. This includes the 2007 animated movie TMNT , 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , and its 2016 sequel Out of the Shadows .
Its week 2 drop can't compete with the original trilogy, however. The live-action movies from the early '90s are 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , 1991's The Secret of the Ooze , and 1993's Turtles in Time . However, these numbers are somewhat relative as Mutant Mayhem's opening weekend was higher than those of all three movies. In fact, its week 2 gross is still higher than Turtles in Time's opening, which only took in $12.4 million.
As the international grosses come in this weekend, the cumulative worldwide total of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem could be well on its way to $100 million. If it keeps up this kind of audience retention, it could continue to expand throughout late August and September. Should that happen, it will have more than earned the Mutant Mayhem sequel and spinoff series that have already been greenlit.
