Timeless legends and new-age artists to share one stage at the Off-White Concert
In an ever-evolving world, it has become pivotal for any entity to exercise inclusivity. This is the vision Banda Banda, founder of Banda Banda Agency, had in mind when he decided to bring together jazz legend Simphiwe Dana and new-age artists, such as Samthing Soweto, Langa Mavuso, Maleh, Zoe Modiga and Mandisi Dyantis, for this year’s instalment of his annual Off-White Concert.
When Simphiwe Dana entered the music scene in the early 2000s, she almost instantly took over the industry, winning Best Newcomer and Best Jazz at the SA Music Awards with her debut album, Zandisile. Samthing Soweto’s bold step to permanently exit one of Mzansi’s most renowned acapella and Afro-pop groups, The Soil, back in 2010, led to an immensely successful solo career that produced hits like Akanamali, Akulaleki and Amagents.
It feels like yesterday when I first heard Simphiwe Dana’s voice in one of the scenes on the hit TV show Yizo Yizo. I was just a teenager then, and if you had told me I’d be sharing the stage with her many years later, I probably would have laughed in total disbelief. I am extremely excited and grateful for this opportunity.
Samthing Soweto also went on to declare his ultimate respect for the artistry of Zoey Modiga and Langa Mavuso who deliver their work graciously and elegantly. Modiga also expressed her excitement about being a part of a multigenerational and multicultural show, especially in a diverse country like Mzansi. This promises to be a soulful, groovy show where audiences will have the chance to dance to their hearts' contentment just as much as they will sit back, loosen up and sing along.
