Time’s Up President Tina Tchen has resigned amid controversy over the advocacy group’s involvement in former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of sexual-harassment allegations

Tina Tchen resigned as president and chief executive of Time’s Up on Thursday, calling her leadership a “painful and divisive focal point” amid controversy over the advocacy group’s involvement in former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of sexual harassment allegations.

“Now is the time for Time’s Up to evolve and move forward as there is so much more work to do for women. It is clear that I am not the leader who can accomplish that in this moment,” Ms. Tchen wrote in a statement. The Time’s Up board of directors said it accepted her resignation. “Accepting her resignation today is a demonstration of accountability and will allow our organization to move forward,” the board said in a statement. Monifa Bandele, the organization’s chief operating officer, will be interim CEO starting Aug. 31.

Ms. Tchen’s resignation comes several weeks after Roberta Kaplan, Time’s Up chairwoman and co-founder of the group’s legal defense fund,Ms. Kaplan resigned after a 165-page report from the New York attorney general on Mr. Cuomo’s harassment allegations detailed her role in reviewing an opinion article that sought to discredit the former governor’s first accuser, Lindsey Boylan.
