Australian boxing champion Tim Tszyu's first title defence fight is in doubt after he suffered a shock injury just three weeks out from his bout against Carlos Ocampo.
Tszyu was reported to have been bitten by a dog on his right arm on Sunday before he was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery that evening, Fox Sports reported.
Tszyu’s promoter No Limit Boxing boss George Rose admitted the setback was not ideal but insisted there were no plans to postpone the fight. “He has the best and most experienced team around him in world boxing. They have reassured me he’ll be more than ready on June 18 to take on Ocampo. If they’re confident, I’m confident.”
Tszyu has been set on remaining active and has continued to take fights despite being eligible for a unifying world title bout against American star Jermell Charlo later in the year. Taking on the former world title contender Ocampo is seen as a big risk for Tszyu as a loss would cost him a shot at the unifying world title bout.
“After all the waiting and uncertainty, it’s crazy to think it’s Jermell Charlo who has the advantage. He’s prepping now and doesn’t have a world-class, tough Mexican in Carlos Ocampo trying to take everything away from him.
