When the Kiwi singer tours Australia this month, he will do so as a beloved elder statesman – which could not be more different from his first arena show here.
Songs written and sung by Tim Finn are omnipresent nowadays. Buy a round of drinks at the pub every time
Finn’s melodically gifted younger brother, Neil, was still a couple of years away from joining Split Enz, and that night at the Hordern, the University of Auckland alumni prioritised obscurity and theatricality over crowd-pleasing rock songs. “We were so out of context – so wrong on so many levels for that night – and I remember the boos started up and got really loud, then the beer cans came flying,” Finn says.
Those hit songs happened soon enough: first for Split Enz, then in the solo career Finn left the band to pursue in 1984, and then again in 1991 when he re-joined Neil for a stint in his group Crowded House and co-wrote their most successful album,Finn’s career might have taken some intriguing left-turns since – he scored the hit 2016 musical, for instance – but he has no qualms about focusing on his well-worn hits for the upcoming tour.
