TikTok, in collaboration with the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF), recently organized the second edition of its 'Surf's Up: Deputies of Digital Literacy' event at UiTM's Shah Alam campus during the COMMED Festival. The event aimed to create a safer digital space and foster digital literacy among university students through engaging sessions with industry leaders, TikTok creators, and students.

The event is part of TikTok’s commitment to creating a safer digital space and to instill digital literacy at universities across Malaysia.) in Shah Alam, in conjunction with the Faculty of Communications and Media Studies’ COMMED Festival.
TikTok’s Surf’s Up series is part of the social video platform’s mission to nurture respectful and secure online communities. By targeting university students, the initiative aims to instill self-regulation habits and awareness of harmful online content. Over 571 UiTM students took the pledge to #ThinkTwice, committing to creating supportive and inclusive digital environments.
A panel of experts were invited to share their insights into promoting safer online practices. The panelists include TikTok Awards Malaysia 2024 Education Creator of the Year Nominee and practicing lawyer, Hafiz Baharudin; TikTok Trust and Safety Manager Waskito Jati; CMCF CEO Mediha Mahmood; and UiTM lecturer Dewi Seribayu Nordin Selat.
Besides panel discussions, students were also given the chance to engage with TikTok educational creator Reina Lum and Machino co-founder Amy Tai. Reina shared her content creating process including how to ensure her content is factual and timely as she tackles public and social issues on a regular basis. Meanwhile, Amy shared how she manages her interactions on platforms like TikTok to communicate with new and existing customers, and how to separate personal and public life on the internet.
