A Tijuana doctor accused of negligent manslaughter in the death of a Long Beach woman during a cosmetic surgery agreed Friday to pay the woman’s family about $194,000 to settle the case. If he complies with the agreement, he will avoid further criminal prosecution in Mexico.with manslaughter due to malpractice and negligence in the January 2021 death of 38-year-old Keuana Weaver, a mother of two. He was also charged with a crime related to performing a function he is not authorized to perform.
He attended Friday’s hearing virtually and agreed to pay the settlement in four installments before Jan. 17. As Mexican law dictates, the judge indicated that if he complies with the terms of the settlement he will avoid criminal prosecution. Otherwise, the criminal case against him will continue as if there were no agreement.
The victim’s mother, Renee Weaver, was unaware of the hearing and the settlement and expressed dismay when reached by phone Friday. She claimed the man who agreed to the settlement on Weaver’s behalf, who was identified in court as her husband, was not legally married to her because Weaver never divorced her first husband.Renee Weaver, who lives in San Bernardino County, was upset to hear that the doctor will avoid prison if he complies with the settlement.
