From MarketWatch Picks: 'If we're really honest with ourselves' here's how we can find real savings in our budgets, one pro says.

Lifestyle creep — when you earn more and thus spend more — can happen to the best of us. It can also keep us from saving for an emergency fund, trip, house or whatever else we’re hoping to put away money for — something that can be especially costly now when many savings accounts are paying 5% or more . It can even happen to celebs and athletes, who may earn millions only to go broke in the coming years.

For her part, Haddish says she’s not an over-spender, and probably won’t be for a long time. She told People magazine that: “I still drive a Honda HR-V.” And she notes that “I’m probably going to be cheap with my money for a long time. You know I’ve been homeless, so it’s like, ‘Yeah it’s here now but will it be here in 5 years?’ I don’t know,” Haddish told People magazine.

Think about the money savings can save you. Savings can prevent you from being stuck with an unexpected expense you can’t afford. “If your car breaks down and you need $1,000 to fix it, you might have to pay extra financing charges to take Ubers for a week and that lost money is what missing a savings account costs,” says Persichitte.

Other experts recommend a starting goal of $1,000 in a savings account. “Aim for $1,000 and then evaluate your situation,” says Persichitte.
