A winter storm that has impacted swaths of the eastern Rockies, the Plains and the upper Midwest was expected to continue spreading winter weather across the country, even reaching New England in the coming days.
The Denver area could get more than a foot of snow from a storm system moving through Colorado. The National Weather Service warned of"miserable conditions" for Wednesday morning's commute. More than 24 million Americans were under a winter weather advisory Thursday as a snowstorm that hammered Denver with the biggest two-day snowfall in more than 30 years slowly pushed eastward.
"Winter storm continues for the Upper Midwest Great Lakes Thursday with heavy, blowing snow leading to dangerous travel conditions," theAdditional snowfall totals of around 6-12 inches are forecast for portions of the Upper Great Lakes, with locally higher totals over a foot possible, the statement said. Much of the snowfall is expected to occur over a period of a few hours, with snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour and gusty winds"making travel difficult to impossible.
Some sleet and a glaze of freezing rain may mix in for some areas, generally from central Wisconsin into the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, the weather service said. The snow will begin to taper off from west to east through early Friday morning.
