Three Malaysian citizens were fined RM2,500 each for illegally crossing the Malaysia-Thailand border. They pleaded guilty to entering Malaysia using an unauthorized route.

Three locals were fined RM2,500 each by the Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to the charge of entering Malaysia from Thailand using an unauthorized route last Monday. Mohd Karlili Mohd Hussin, 33, who was the boat taxi driver along with his passengers Lim Teik Hooi, 21, and Mohammad Azrol Azhar, 26, made the admission after the charge was read to them before Magistrate Mohd Izdham Naim Che Ani.

The court also ordered a one-month jail term if the three individuals fail to pay the fine. According to the charge, they were accused of entering Malaysia from Thailand using an unauthorized route at Tebing Sungai Pengkalan Haram Pohon Jambu, Rantau Panjang here, around 4 pm on December 16. They were charged under Section 5(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) which can be punished under Section 57 of the same act which provides a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment for not more than five years or both. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahfuzah Hamizah Mohd Ariff while all the accused were represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) Tiara Shahira Mohd Wira. Earlier, Mahfuzah Hamizah appealed for a commensurate and deterrent sentence against all the accused so that they would use the authorized route, however, Tiara Shahira in her appeal requested for the minimum fine to be imposed on them. This case is the first charge recorded after the Kelantan police declared that they would arrest any Malaysian citizens who use illegal routes to cross the Malaysia-Thailand border, particularly along the Sungai Golok, starting December 1 last.
