With a recent revelation made in Thor's Marvel Comics ongoing series, fans learned that Mjolnir's MCU destruction is actually much more tragic than any fan had previously thought.
In the latest chapter of Marvel Comics ongoing Thor series, the titular hero is faced with a revelation that makes Mjolnir’s MCU destruction so much worse. As fans are well aware, Mjolnir was destroyed by the hands of Hela in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thor: Ragnarok. While that was an impactful moment for Thor given that he lost his long-time weapon, that scene becomes so much more tragic when considering what was just revealed in Marvel Comics.
In Thor #21 by Donny Cates and Nic Klein, Thor is fighting one of the most powerful beings he has ever had to conquer: his own hammer. Mjolnir, as it turns out, is a sentient being and is more alive than fans initially realized. There was always a level of autonomy to the hammer that gave off the impression that Mjolnir was alive, but that was usually chalked up to the enchantment the weapon was placed under by Odin.
While tragic on a humanitarian level, it seems as though Thor wouldn’t mind it if Hela gave the comics version of Mjolnir the MCU treatment. Since the embodiment of Mjolnir revealed herself to be the God of Hammers, she has been absolutely demolishing Thor. Mjolnir beat Thor to a pulp in their battle, so much so that Odin had to intervene and use his magic to send the being as far away as cosmically possible.
Mjolnir has become an enemy to Thor in the current comics after revealing herself to be a cosmic, sentient being. Even though Thor would assuredly be happy to be rid of her, the fact that Mjolnir is actually a living being and not just an enchanted hammer makes the fact that she was shattered to bits in the MCU that much more tragic.
