CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s 2023 budget plans call for the elimination of some 250 unfilled city jobs to help avoid another year of deficit spending – a move that, if delayed to future years, could result in layoffs, Bibb said.
Abonamah said Thursday that the city does not realistically have the capacity to process the hiring of 400 or 500 officers in one year. Bibb disputed any notion that the move could be considered a defunding of the police, noting that the police’s 2023 budget would still be millions higher than the amount spent on policing last year, owed in large part to those wage increases.finds that Cleveland requires more police officers than what’s included in the 2023 budget plans.
