Why are shares in Altium, Megaport and Hub24 surging but Kogan.com, Perenti and Data#3 slumping? Tuesday’s answer is that investors just want growth.

The top performers had it in spades. Software companies Altium, Megaport and Hub24, were the three biggest gainers on Tuesday morning with 15-plus per cent jumps.

Investors are flooded with these trading desk calls – and they all tend to be pretty similar. Trading desks, particularly hungry this year after a six-month malaise in activity, bombard clients with emails, that summarise the results and usually have links to the all-important company calls and sell-side arranged briefings.

Trading desks are quick to call a result a beat, a miss or inline. And it is amazing how these calls match up with how a stock trades on results day.So on Tuesday we have Altium, Megaport, Hub24 and ARB Corp all up or down more than 10 per cent. On Monday it was Iress, which tanked 36 per cent on its lack of growth, rising costs and concerns about its balance sheet, while Breville Group was up strongly thanks to better than expected sales growth and inventory management.
