Disrupting local wildlife, attracting hoodlums and lowering property values are among the laundry list of objections to the plan for nighttime tennis.

A fresh bid to install floodlights at a north shore tennis club has ignited a wave of opposition from neighbours who claim the lights would disrupt local wildlife, attract hoodlums and lower the value of their multimillion-dollar properties.

But dozens of neighbours are campaigning vigorously against the lights, including Sydney to Hobart veteran and Australian Sailing Hall of Fame member Adrienne Cahalan, who submitted a 28-page dossier detailing her objections. Adrienne Cahalan said the lighting plan was creating “resentment and division” between the club and the community.Another resident, Charlotte Osmand, submitted that the installation of lights reflected a “selfish push to always be thinking about ourselves and what we can gain from enjoyment”, and a desire to “replace all that is natural with all that is artificial”.

Former Longueville Tennis Club president Bruce Hogan with local players Will and Christina Hong, and young Alfred.Longueville resident and tennis club member Geoff Grinter said the lights would lower the value of nearby properties. Dozens of submissions also questioned the level of demand for nighttime tennis and pointed out several other courts within a five-kilometre radius were lit at night.

The adjacent oval does not have lights, though the attached pavilion does. “It’s not like whatever possums are down there don’t acclimatise,” Hogan said.
