The French house’s latest vintage comes with a soundtrack from Japan’s most celebrated living composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Krug’s latest vintage comes with a soundtrack from Japan’s greatest living composer, but the champagne house promises it’s not a mere marketing ploy.while sipping the wines that inspired it will make them taste even better, according to Olivier Krug, the director of the Reims-based institution run by his family for six generations.

“[Krug’s cellar master] Julie Cavil talked to me about ‘cultivating the differences in the vineyard’, that it’s not just about finding the best wines but the largest aromatic palette to blend the most generous champagne,” he says.“The philosophy resonated with me. You have to open your ears all the time because anything could happen unexpectedly. Anything can be music. A wrong note could be a hint of a musical idea.

Sakamoto’s three-part work was performed by 36 of his favourite musicians in a converted Tokyo warehouse last November, at a private concert attended by more than 100 guests from around the world, including. A crystalline solo piano representing Krug’s single-vineyard Clos du Mesnil built into an elegant chamber piece for its 2008 vintage, before swelling into orchestral harmonics for its multi-vintage Grande Cuvée. Guests were presented with each wine at the appropriate moment.

Your correspondent can concur that the music seemed to encourage a deeper appreciation of the characteristics of each wine. The tight bubbles and precise flavours of the Clos du Mesnil, in particular, were enhanced when concentrating on Sakamoto’s meditative opening piano melody – perhaps more so for the fact that the composer himself, a long-time musical hero of mine, was too ill to perform it in person, so there was no danger of becoming starstruck.
