As 'yellow shirts,' Dan and Danny Hagist hope to help others experience the magic that keeps bringing them back to the Indy 500, year after year.

This month's series, 500 for 500, honors the Month of May with stories about the Indianapolis 500 and the everyday people involved with the race in 500 words.
It was an era when young people felt invincible. They reeked of beer, and they were painted in mud. They stood on cars and each other’s shoulders and makeshift platforms — anything but the ground. Much like his life, Dan Hagist’s relationship to the Indy 500 has changed dramatically since his high school days. At 22, he joined IMS’ safety patrol team, the ‘yellow shirts’ responsible for directing fans, checking tickets and keeping the crowd safe.
