Becoming a patient himself has left this doctor with a new appreciation for the neurological work patients put in every day as part of their rehabilitation.

It caused weakness to his left side, leaving him in need of therapy to help relearn things like getting dressed.“Tying shoelaces were pretty much impossible for me to do on my own – day-to-day simple things like that, because you use both your hands for those tasks.”About half an hour later, he noticed his left arm felt weak.As a stroke specialist, he knows what feeling weak on one side could mean.

Dr Mahesh stands next to a robotic exoskeleton for rehabilitation of the arm, which he used during his recovery following a stroke. — TNS A stroke happens when blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, preventing the brain from getting oxygen and nutrients. His neurological recovery included physical therapy to strengthen muscles and improve balance; occupational therapy to relearn things like picking up cups; and speech therapy, where a therapist checked things like swallowing and speech production.

“That’s kind of a change in my practice, that I’ll say: You need to work hard, but you also need to get that rest so your body can re- charge,” he said.
